A 55-year-old Brooklyn man was charged with vehicular assault and driving while intoxicated after police say his car struck a 13-year-old boy crossing the street in Borough Park on a Friday morning. The teen was critically injured.
What police and court papers say happened
According to CBS New York and News 12 Brooklyn, the crash happened just before 8 a.m. near 38th Street and 15th Avenue. Police say Jaime Aguilar Sanchez was driving a 2008 Nissan Versa when it struck the boy. The impact threw the teen into the opposite lane, where he was struck by a school bus. Both drivers stayed at the scene. The boy was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, unconscious and intubated, in critical condition.
Court papers cited by News 12 say officers noted an odor of alcohol and bloodshot eyes, and that Mr. Aguilar Sanchez lost his balance six times during a sobriety test.
The charges
Mr. Aguilar Sanchez was charged with vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, and driving while ability impaired, according to reports. News 12 described the impairment allegation as involving both alcohol and drugs. He appeared before a judge the next day, and his next court date was set for July 1, 2026.
What this case shows
Two things stand out. First, time of day: most alcohol-involved crashes in Brooklyn happen late at night, but this one is alleged to have happened during the morning school commute. Alcohol from the night before does not leave the body on a schedule, and a morning-after DWI is a real and common charge.
